Non-ACA Health Insurance in Dallas–Fort Worth and Across Texas

Not everyone needs, or can use, an ACA plan.

Other options can help fill a gap in coverage, pay for expenses your plan doesn’t cover, or protect you against a specific event.

I explain what these options are, how they work, and their limitations so you can make an informed decision.

Important Information Before You Decide

These plans are not comprehensive health insurance.

They do not have to follow ACA rules.

They may have coverage limits and exclusions, and many do not cover pre-existing conditions.

Before you enroll, I explain what each plan covers and what it doesn’t.

Options I Offer

Short-Term Health Insurance
  • What it is: Temporary health coverage for a limited period.

  • What it can help with: Filling a gap between plans or covering a period without insurance.

  • Keep in mind: You may be denied coverage based on your health. Benefits are limited, and coverage ends on the date specified in your contract.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance
  • What it is: Pays a fixed amount for a covered event, such as each day you spend in the hospital.

  • What it can help with: Deductibles, lost income, or household expenses during a hospital stay.

  • Keep in mind: It does not pay your actual hospital bill. It pays the amount specified in your contract.

Cancer and Critical Illness Insurance
  • What it is: Pays a benefit if you are diagnosed with a covered illness.

  • What it can help with: Providing money for medical bills and everyday expenses.

  • Keep in mind: It covers only the illnesses listed in the policy, subject to the policy’s terms and conditions.

Accident Insurance
  • What it is: Pays a benefit if you suffer an accidental injury.

  • What it can help with: Emergency care, treatment, and recovery expenses.

  • Keep in mind: It covers accidents, not illnesses.

Dental and Vision Insurance
  • What it is: Separate plans for dental and vision care.

  • What it can help with: Dental cleanings, treatments, and eyeglasses.

  • Keep in mind: These plans have annual limits, and some have waiting period.

How Do These Options Compare With an ACA Plan?

  • Pre-existing conditions: An ACA plan cannot deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition. Non-ACA options may deny you coverage or exclude those conditions.

  • Benefits: An ACA plan covers ten essential health benefits. Non-ACA options cover only what is specified in each contract.

  • Help with the cost: An ACA plan may qualify for financial assistance based on your income. Non-ACA options do not receive government financial assistance.

  • When you can enroll: You can enroll in an ACA plan during Open Enrollment or after a qualifying life event. Non-ACA options are generally available year-round.

When Might These Options Be Worth Considering?

  • You missed Open Enrollment and don’t have a qualifying life event that allows you to enroll in an ACA plan.

  • You need temporary coverage until another plan begins.

  • You already have an ACA or employer-sponsored plan and want help with expenses that plan doesn’t cover.

  • You want to add dental and vision coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this the same as comprehensive health insurance?

    • No. These plans provide less coverage than an ACA plan. They are designed for specific needs or to supplement other coverage.

  • Do they cover pre-existing conditions?

    • Often, they do not. Each contract specifies its rules. I explain them before you decide.

  • Can I have an ACA plan and a fixed-benefit plan at the same time?

    • Yes. Fixed-benefit, cancer, critical illness, and accident insurance plans are often used to supplement a primary health insurance plan.

  • Can a short-term plan be renewed?

    • It depends on the contract and your health. You may not be able to get another plan when your coverage ends. That’s why we review this before you enroll.

  • How much do these plans cost?

    • It depends on your age, health, and the type of plan. The assessment is free, and I’ll show you actual plan options.

  • Do you serve families outside Dallas–Fort Worth?

    • Yes. I help families throughout Texas by phone and online.
